The Female Food Founders Award, presented for the first time by Alexandra Wuttig, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Chancellor of IUBH International University, to the Sonnengläschen team of the Weihenstephan Food Startup Incubator, recognizes female food startup founding teams who stand out primarily through innovative and sustainable food products.
The three students Anja Baumgärtner, Franziska Doll, and Luisa Pelzer from the Sonnengläschen team managed to develop, produce, and successfully sell their delicious spreads made from rescued vegetables in just 18 months, all while pursuing their full-time studies in food technology at Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences. After founding their own company, they have now achieved considerable success. Their first production run sold out completely in just two days.
Their goal, guided by the motto "No waste - it's taste," is to rescue vegetables that are no longer suitable for retail due to cosmetic imperfections or simply being the wrong size. They transform these vegetables into delicious, high-quality spreads, which are now available in two varieties: tomato and basil, and garlic dip.
Approximately 12 million tons of food currently end up in the trash in Germany alone every year. With their company, the three creative female founders of a food startup want to contribute to reducing food waste.
