Launch of the EU project STREAMING at HSWT: International cooperation to strengthen sustainable food systems

The EU project STREAMING (Sustainable Trade Regimes with Europe and Africa through Mapping Innovation, New-Technology and Growth-Mindset) was launched in early March 2025 with a kick-off event at HSWT in Freising. Over the next 40 months, 15 institutions from 12 African and European countries – including Tunisia, Senegal, Togo, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, and Serbia – will work together to develop strategies for promoting fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly food systems.

The project aims to make the food industry in Europe and Africa more sustainable. The following aspects are the focus:

  • Providing safe, healthy, affordable and sustainable food for consumers
  • Improving the ecological functions of agricultural systems
  • Protection and promotion of biodiversity
  • Reduction of environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions and pressure on ecosystems
  • Promoting the health of plants, animals and humans
  • Improvement of animal welfare
  • Ensuring economic stability for farmers

The project supports the transition to sustainable and socially inclusive food systems. At the same time, it contributes to climate protection and adaptation to climate change. Another focus is on promoting a circular economy to ensure healthy nutrition, reduce food shortages, and strengthen communities. To safeguard food security and economic stability in Europe, companies in the sector also receive targeted support.

STREAMING also focuses on promoting innovation and entrepreneurship, particularly for women, researchers, students, and agricultural businesses. Furthermore, the project provides valuable input for trade policy in Africa and Europe, especially regarding the elimination of non-tariff trade barriers and strengthening resilience to global challenges such as climate change.

The project, coordinated by HSWT, is being funded with a total of €4.43 million as part of the EU's HORIZON program. Of this, €875,000 will be specifically allocated to African projects to promote innovative approaches.
